OBJECTIVE: TO PROMOTE THE DEVELOPMENT OF STROKE RESEARCH IN ONTARIO
THIS AWARD IS INTENDED FOR INDIVIDUALS BEGINNING THEIR POST-GRADUATE SCIENTIFIC RESEARCH CAREER IN THE AREA OF STROKE RESEARCH.
The Heart and Stroke Foundation of Ontario (HSFO) offers two research Fellowship Awards to highly qualified candidates who have completed all formal academic training and who wish to acquire additional supervised research experience in an established research setting, working with an identified academic supervisor. The award is intended for applicants with a M.D. or Ph.D. or equivalent. Applicants must have a strong interest in pursuing a career in stroke research.
The award has two phases—a Research Fellowship phase (Phase 1; maximum 6 years) and a subsequent Research New Investigator phase (Phase 2; maximum 5 years).
Phase 1 is a Post-doctoral Fellowship award for a period of a maximum of six years. Applicants are reviewed through the National Research Fellowship peer review process. Continued funding in years 4-6 of the award is conditional upon submission of a detailed progress report to the Provincial Heart and Stroke Foundation of Ontario and approval by the HSFO Research Committee. Research Fellows are provided with a small amount of additional funds in years 4-6 for operating/equipment expenses. A Research Fellow may not hold a faculty position during Phase 1.
Phase 2 is a Research New Investigator award for a period of 5 years, conditional upon success in the National Research New Investigator peer review competition.
The Foundation expects nominating institutions to offer successful candidates a full-time faculty, staff or equivalent position, with no less that 75% effort reserved for research, at the completion of the training period, subject to satisfactory performance in the research training period. This commitment is required at the time of application.
Applications for the first phase of the award (Fellowship level support) must be submitted into the National Research Fellowship Award competition by November 1, 2007 for commencement July 1, 2008. . To be considered for either phase of this award please also submit 2 copies of the application with cover letter acknowledging your intent to be considered for this award to the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Ontario.
All applications will undergo the national research Fellowship or New Investigator peer review by the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada, in accordance with the standards and criteria employed by the Fellowships and New Investigators Review Committees.
